Father-Son Team Can Handle It All

For Craig Noon, one of the best parts of working for Done by Noon Handyman Services is hearing customers tell him how much they respect his dad.

That’s Jim Noon, founder and owner of Done by Noon, a handyman service based in Louisville that is now available in the Bluegrass area. That’s because Craig has joined his father’s business.

Which makes sense given the family history with tools, repairs and expert craftsmanship.

Jim learned his skills from his father, James, an American Airlines employee who was a jack of all trades at home. From an early age, Jim helped his father with everything from household repairs to adding an addition to the family home.

Jim used those skills around the home he created with wife Sheri and their two sons Craig, 32, and Adam, 28. Jim owned his own Snap-On tools franchise for nearly 25 years in Louisville while working as a handyman on the side.

Three years ago, he founded Done by Noon with the idea of making it a family business. A devoted dad, he has always been there for his sons whether it was coaching Little League, helping with the high school band or taking ambitious camping/backpacking trips.

“He was super involved with our lives since day one,” Craig said. “He chose a career where he could dictate his own schedule so he could coach Little League. When I became a swimmer, he was at every meet and practice and volunteered as a timer.

“Same thing with the high school band. We traveled all over and he volunteered with transporting equipment so he could be there with us.”

Most memorable were the ambitious father-son adventures. Highlights were a six-day bicycling trip in New England, a camping trip to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, and most adventuresome of all, an eight-day camping/backpacking trip to remote Lake Clark National Park and Preserve in Alaska.

“We flew in from Anchorage on a float plane and landed in a place that was 120 miles from civilization,” Craig said. “That was probably our biggest trip.”

To handle the elements, it helped that both Craig and Adam were Eagle Scouts.

That kind of capability and dedication are the bedrock of the Done by Noon business, whose motto is Dependable, Trustworthy, Quality of Work.

“I like to do work, complete it right and don’t stop till it’s done correctly,” Jim said. “I’ve always been in customer service so pleasing the customer is our top priority.”

Done by Noon handles all kinds of jobs. “No job is too small,” as Jim likes to say.

Services include pressure washing, fence repair, drywall installation and repair, painting and staining, flooring, carpentry, crown molding, door installation and repair, and gutter repair and clearing.

The skills of the two men complement each other. Jim handles most of the carpentry, and Craig has a background in electrical, plumbing and appliance maintenance.

Craig has five years experience in the field, first at a golf course in Louisville, and then as a facility manager with property management companies in Louisville and Lexington. In Lexington, he oversaw more than 2,000 apartment units and individual homes.

“I’ve done everything from a light switch that doesn’t work to a major flood in a 22-story apartment building,” he said.

That job built on skills he first learned from his father.

“I became acquainted with tools at a young age, and working with my hands came naturally to me,” Craig said.

Although Jim is based in Louisville, Craig in Central Kentucky, the two are in constant contact throughout the day, and work together when the job requires a two-man effort.

“Working together is great,” Craig said. “He’s been an excellent role model my entire life. It’s interesting working together every day especially when customers say, ‘You’re dad’s a great guy.’ That’s pretty cool.”
