KidChella Festival A Hit With Families

Central Kentucky families braved the heat and turned out in droves for the inaugural KidChella Arts & Music Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Hosted by Lexington Family Magazine and Lexington Parks & Recreation, Kidchella attracted more than 2,000 people throughout the day who listened to live music, created art and played games at the Moondance Amphitheater in Beaumont Center.

A fun day was had by all, despite the high temperatures. The event was free to the public thanks to sponsorships by The Living Arts & Science and Willis Music.

Local songwriter Sarah Smitha performed an interactive set, followed by traditional Appalachian children’s folk music by Julia Purcell and Randy Wilson.

The Living Arts & Science Center invited kids on stage to create life-sized self portraits, and Willis Music hosted an instrument demo for the crowd.

The Bluegrass Youth Ballet and Elevate Academy of Dance performed pieces from popular shows, complete with beautifully costumed dancers. The March Madness Marching Band energized the crowd with its hula hooping tricks, vibrant costumes and upbeat music.

The Stereos, Mayor and The Originals rocked the house with covers of classic hits, and Zak Morgan closed the festival with his Grammy-nominated music.

When attendees weren’t dancing to the music, they visited the activity booths set up throughout the grass at Moondance. Children could decorate a teepee, make jewelry, have their faces painted, play games, create collages and more.
