LASC Celebrates Another Year Of Its Science Explorers Program

For the 14th year in a row, the Living Arts & Science Center has helped more than 200 low-income, underserved students with its Science Explorers program. The program is offered at five Title 1 elementary schools in Lexington: Cardinal Valley, Russell Cave, Yates, William Wells Brown, and Arlington.

Science Explorers is a free after-school program that has grown in the number of students it has helped and the academic improvement of those students.

The test scores for these Explorers have routinely improved between 50% and 60%. The program’s benefits don’t just stop at the students. The program also encourages family engagement activities, supports outreach programs that provide school day activities, and gives professional development opportunities for teachers.

The LASC founded the Science Explorers program to improve the lives of students and the people around them. Providing creative, hands-on learning opportunities for these students is a major part of the program. It also offers students leadership and peer teaching opportunities.

The program encourages teachers to better engage with these students and engage families in learning together through interactive arts and science events, classes and activities.

After each semester of Science Explorers, the LASC holds celebration nights. All the participants and their families are invited to attend the event, where they will be treated to dinner.

The celebration also includes activities that demonstrate what students have learned over the course of the semester.
