Big Latch On Will Mark World Breastfeeding Week

Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week at The Big Latch On, set for Saturday, Aug. 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Park in Lexington. The Big Latch On is part of an international effort to set a world record for most babies breastfeeding at a set time, and to share breastfeeding information and resources in the community.

The Bluegrass Big Latch On is cohosted by the Mindful Moms of the Bluegrass and the Lexington Fayette-County Health Department. Event organizer Ashley Crossen said one of the goals of the Latch On is to eliminate the taboo around breastfeeding.

“Breastfeeding is exhausting and can be difficult and overwhelming at times, especially for first-time moms. Without support, it can be even harder. This event gives moms a change to meet other nursing moms in our community, meet with local professionals who can help with any issues, and just generally provides a sense of togetherness.”

The event will have snacks, door prizes, a kid-friendly trivia wheel by Local Trivia Action, crafts for children and a playground nearby. Activities begin at 9 a.m. The latch-on is at 10:30 a.m.

This year the goal is break the current Global Big Latch On records of:

17,992 children breastfeeding during the count time period

17,852 breastfeeding women attending

48,628 total attendance
