I had a dream the other night about our Summer Camp & Activities Fair (held April 12). I dreamed that it was 2 p.m., the time the Fair was scheduled to end, but our guests wouldn’t leave. The cleaning staff had arrived to clear out the tables and still there were a dozen kids having a jump rope contest on the performance stage. The crew arrived to take down the inflatable slide, but there was still a line of kids waiting to go down it. Parents were still talking to camp directors and health professionals and no one would leave!
Wait, that wasn’t a dream. It really happened!
Our Summer Camps & Activities Fair is our biggest event of the year and the only one of its kind in Central Kentucky. Over 2,700 people streamed through the doors at Kentucky Indoor Soccer & Sports from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In fact, because we were giving away chances to win tickets to see High School Musical: The Ice Tour, there were 395 people lined up when the doors opened at 10.
Why did the families come? They came to sign up for camps and classes for their kids at the 60 booths set up around the soccer fields. They came to meet dentists, doctors, vision care specialists, parenting instructors and dance teachers. They came to see the Sho Stoppas, Lexington’s newest national award-winning hip hop dance group. They came to see the Jessamine Ice All Star Cheerleaders, the gymnastics from Legacy Gymnastics, the beautiful models from Images Model and Talent Agency.
They also came to see Ronald McDonald. He greeted our visitors and put on a wonderful show courtesy of our Gold Sponsor – McDonalds of Lexington (special thanks to Nelson McMakin, Al Nahra, Phil Wilkins and Joe Graviss who made this sponsorship possible).
Most of all our visitors came for the fun! Every booth had a special game, craft or activity for the kids to enjoy. Lexington Gymnastics brought the biggest inflatable slide I’ve ever seen, and there were toss games, video games, face painting, hair painting, dance lessons, mad scientist experiments, bracelet beading, Play Station giveaways going on every where you looked.
They also came for the prizes. We gave away a bunkbed from Baby’s Room & Kids, Too, the newest American Girl Doll, Breyer model horses, video games, books, CDs, DVDs, toys, games and classes, camps, t-shirts and other prizes from our booths.
It was an amazing day. Sure hope you were there!
