Sts. Peter & Paul School Embarks on New Era

Sts. Peter & Paul School (SPPS) has a long tradition of academic excellence and has served families in the Bluegrass region since 1913.

SPPS is a Blue Ribbon School, placing it in the top 10% of the nation based on test scores.

SPPS was also a 2009 recipient of the “Catholic Schools for Tomorrow” award for innovation in the arts and total community involvement.

On top of all this success, the school is in the final months of completing its $11 million facility on 423 W. Short St. (next to St. Paul’s Catholic Church).

Construction and renovations will be completed in May, allowing students in first through eighth grade to begin the 2010-11 school year in the new facilities.

Preschool and kindergarten students will be in the building at 133 Barr St (next to St. Peter’s Catholic Church).

This plan will provide the much needed space for students in early education.
Students in the new facility will enjoy the use of new classrooms, a gymnasium with walking track, a renovated theater for music and drama performances, an entire wing dedicated to the arts (including music, visual and performing arts), and a state-of-the-art science lab to enhance the educational experience.

These improvements are possible with the help of generous donors in the community.

The Knights of Columbus helped with the costs of the gym.

A grant from the W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Foundation funded the theater renovations.

Dr. Pearse and Deirdre Lyons with Alltech made a generous commitment to build the science lab.

According to Principal Julie Wright, it has often been said that SPPS is the best kept secret in town.

“We are seeing an influx of students in the lower grade levels in anticipation of our new facilities being completed,” she said.

“We already have waiting lists for next year in some of the younger grade levels.

“This is going to be a historic year for the school, and it will be exciting for families to be a part of it.”

The long range vision for the school includes multiple elements.

First was to update the facilities. Other components include developing a cutting-edge arts program, continued academic excellence, and the ability to meet the needs of all children.

All of this revolves around a faith-based, spiritual environment.

There is much history inside the walls at SPPS. Preserving the past and building for the future will impact generations to come.
