B’s Abound
For Girl With All A’s
.........................................................................................
For a straight-A student who has never received so much as one B, the letter B has played a big role in the life of Hannah Prater.
The 14-year-old rising freshman at Lexington Catholic can bend it like Beckham on the soccer field. Her favorite classical composer is Bach, and while playing the piano, she loves to sing the Disney movie hit “Beauty and the Beast.”
And that reflects only some of Hannah’s talents.
In the classroom, she’s a perennial 4.0 student and was one of only five Christ the King eighth-graders to go K through 8 with all A’s.
In seventh grade, she was a Duke University T.I.P qualifier, and she is so proficient in Spanish she served as translator for her parents on a trip two years ago to Mexico.
Hannah was a member of Christ the King’s academic team, specializing in science, her favorite subject. A highlight of her science studies came when she extracted DNA from strawberries.
A strong math student, Hannah is considering architecture as a career and has helped her father -- a home and commercial builder -- with his blueprints.
There’s also a soft side to Hannah. She loves to draw, passing out hand-made cards for birthdays and holidays. And music is her first love.
“I like singing and playing the piano and performing,” she says.
She has played the piano for four years, earning superior ratings at her frequent recitals. A long-time member of the school chorus, she also has performed in school plays, including “Annie” and “Schoolhouse Rock,” in which she sang a solo.
Hannah works as a community volunteer and is active in her church. So how does she find time to accomplish so much and still excel as a soccer player?
“Hannah is very independent and self-motivated,” says her father Steve. “She digs in and gets it done before you know it.”
Adds her mother Jill: “When she gets in the car after school, she immediately starts her homework.
“She is very organized and she’s a perfectionist. She never has to rewrite a report. And her math homework? There’s never any erasure marks. The first time, it’s right.”
Says Hannah: “I don’t like getting bad grades. I like to push myself.”
But without working up a sweat. Which is how she appears on the soccer field.
She’s quick to the ball and a fierce competitor -- her dad called her a beast (another B word) to which Hannah replied, “That’s not a compliment to a girl.”
Especially one as graceful as Hannah. She plays with a fluidity and smoothness that she carries effortlessly on her 5-foot-9-inch frame.
This fall she enters her third season as a member of the LFC Premier. In the spring, she helped the U-14 Premier to the State Cup championship. In a semifinal, 2-0 victory, she scored one goal and assisted on the other.
She also joined the U-16 Premier as a guest player in a tournament in Alabama and got an assist on the team’s first goal of the tournament.
Soccer has taken Hannah all over the U.S. from Atlanta to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
But for now, her sights are set locally -- she wants to make the Lexington Catholic varsity.
Given her skills, that should be a breeze -- and that’s one more B word for the girl with all A’s.
