8th Annual Writing Contest

Lexington Family Magazine is pleased to announce its 8th Annual Writing Contest as part of its Summer Camps & Activities Fair. (The Fair, which is always free, is Saturday, April 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lexington Christian Academy.) We’ve heard from thousands of young authors in the last 7 years from dozens of counties and scores of classrooms. We’d like to hear from you this year!

The focus of our 2012 contest is imagination. Our theme is “Imagine If I Were an Animal…”  We are asking kids in grades K-5 to tell us in 100 words or less what animal they would most like to be. Would you be a lion and rule the savannah? Or be a horse and race in the Derby? How about an eagle, soaring over the countryside? Or a faithful puppy, curled up next to your loving owner? How about a giraffe, a lemur or a komodo dragon? We want to hear from you!

we’ve got an exciting lineup of prizes this year, too. Once again we will be giving away the newest doll from American Girl. McKenna, the 2012 Girl of the Year, is a determine, energetic girl who loves gymnastics but struggles with reading. As she overcomes her challenges she helps her friends overcome theirs as well.

We also have a wonderful prize package of  Breyer Horses from Breyerfest. These models are a great introduction to the world of Breyerfest, which will be held July 20-22 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

We haven’t forgotten the boys either! Each of the winners from the boys category will take home a huge package of games from Hasbro, including Life, Monopoly, Jenga Plus, Guesstures, Battleship, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and more.

Entries will be judged in three age categories: Kindergarten-1st grade, 2nd -3rd grade, and 4th-5th grade. We’ll pick one girl and one boy from each age group as grand-prize winners.

Teachers – enter your whole class and your name will be entered in a drawing for a prize just for you. Be sure to include a contact phone number for yourself so we can notify our winners.

Homeschoolers in Kentucky – this contest is open to you too! Enter your child in the grade level at which you are teaching them.

To enter, kids should mail their story to Lexington Family Magazine, 138 E. Reynolds Rd, Suite 201, Lexington, KY 405017 or e-mail it to Events@LexingtonFamily.com by Friday, March 30. On each entry, please make sure children include their name, gender, teacher’s name, school and grade. Winners will be notified by April 10th and prizes will be awarded at the Summer Camps & Activities Fair on Saturday, April 14, at Lexington Christian (450 West Reynolds Rd). Winners will be listed in the June issue of Lexington Family Magazine.

Teachers, if you have any questions about the contest, please call Laurie Evans at Lexington Family Magazine at 223-1765 or 489-5273. Laurie is also available to speak to your class about writing, working for a magazine or about the writing contest itself.
