Speech Center Starts Therapeutic Playgroup

The Lexington Hearing & Speech Center is launching a new Social Language Building Play Group for children 22 months to 3 years old.

Called “Chatterbox,” the program is for children with hearing, speech and language issues, and will be led by an assistant speech language pathologist.

Classes meet three times a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,  8:30-11:30 a.m. The first session runs Jan. 9-March 23 with a spring session scheduled for March 6-May 5.

The Playgroup will resemble a typical preschool class with story time, finger play, circle time, music and movement but with an emphasis on building language and communication skills.

After an initial evaluation, all students will have a plan that maps out their expected progress.

Classes will range from six to a maximum of 12 students with up to four adults in the classroom.

“Parents have asked for a part-time program that will support social and communication building skills,” Executive Director Marcey Ansley said. “Many families are not ready for their children to be in an all-day program, so this is a good first-social experience for their children.”

The program will be billed by session with the average cost of $75 a week

The Center also operates a daycare/preschool for children 6 weeks through full-day kindergarten that blends children with and without disabilities.
