Doula Events Abound in Lexington
Finding a doula is easier than ever in Lexington. Instead of scheduling multiple appointments to vet potential doulas, several events in town offer one-stop meet and greets for expecting parents.
Gathering several doulas in one place started a year ago at The Birth Haven, with Meet Your Doula. Julie Six, owner of The Birth Haven, describes Meet Your Doula as a scheduled interview session with a team of doulas. She found these meetings allowed parents time to get to know the doulas before making decisions about services.
She also hosts Doula 101, a monthly event open to the public where families can learn about doula services, the evidence for doulas, how to interview a doula, where to find doulas and more.
Julie sees the Doula 101 events as a service to parents where they can gain information in a casual setting.
“This is a community outreach,” she said. “It raises awareness of the importance of doulas in maternity care in a very low-pressure environment.”
In January, Amy Rickard of Beloved Birth Doula Services started offering another monthly meeting for the community. Doula Meet and Greet is held at the Hamburg Babies R Us as an opportunity for families to connect with several doulas and find one that fits their individual needs.
“Many expectant couples are curious about doulas, what they are and how one can benefit them,” she said. “However, many are not sure how to find one and it can be difficult to carve out the time to interview several doulas. I wanted to create an opportunity for families to learn about doulas and to meet several at once in a comfortable and enjoyable setting.”
Both events feature five doulas, and The Birth Haven has a childbirth educator on site to answer questions and give referrals.

Doula Meet and Greet events are held at Babies R Us in Hamburg at 6:30 p.m. the 4th Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for March 24. Parents can contact Babies R Us in Hamburg to register, (859) 263-8598.
Doula 101 is the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7-8:15 p.m. and Meet Your Doula is scheduled on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month between 6-8 p.m. Both are held at The Birth Haven at 2891 Richmond Rd. Parents can contact Julie Six to register for Meet Your Doula, (859) 533-1973.
