“Blossom” Makes Dressing Your Bump Easy

If your maternity clothes often make you feel like you are wearing a circus tent, Rebecca Kent can fix that.

Rebecca is owner of Blossom, a maternity and children’s boutique located on Euclid Avenue. The store was formerly Cradle Will Rock, also a children’s boutique. Rebecca bought the location in late 2011 and opened Blossom in early 2012.

Blossom is tucked away in Chevy Chase, but upon entering the store, a mother-to-be is met with vibrant colors, eclectic décor and racks of fashion-forward maternity and children’s clothes. Rebecca calls the style “fun and funky,” and the atmosphere matches the attitude.

Rebecca is a mother of three- daughter Taylor, 6, daughter Madison, 4, and son Hunter, 1 ½. Her background as a pharmaceutical rep helps her with the sales and marketing aspect of the business, but it’s her role as a mom that keeps things in perspective.

“My kids help me not take things too seriously,” she said. “I’m able to relate to customers and know what they might be feeling, and I’m always seeing new products.”

During her pregnancies, Rebecca noticed a lack of maternity clothes in Lexington. She shopped online or at the mall, but decided it was time for a local place to buy stylish, unique maternity clothes.

“You can’t feel the fabric and the way something fits you online,” she said. “And there are so many options people just don’t know about.”

Designer maternity jeans are a big seller in her store, as well as “Gownies,” hospital gowns in cute colors and prints.

“I love those because right after you have a baby everyone wants to take pictures, and you want to look cute,” Rebecca said.

Rebecca’s usual customers are newly pregnant women who don’t want to sacrifice their pre-pregnant style.

“Many times it’s a newly pregnant woman who is frustrated because they want to still look cute while pregnant,” she said. “They aren’t sure what they are going to look like and feel like and we can give them a whole shopping experience.”

Rebecca encourages pregnant women to start shopping for maternity clothes as soon as regular clothes become tight or uncomfortable. Most of the clothes in Blossom can be worn throughout an entire pregnancy, as well as post-partum and while nursing.

“Maternity clothes are not cheap, so we want it to be something you can wear over and over, a wardrobe that is going to last,” she said.

While her passion is in maternity clothing, Rebecca carries children’s clothes sizes newborn-8 years old, as well as baby leg warmers, nursing covers, car seat covers, lullabye cd’s and more. Blossom also does baby shower registry and hosts baby showers in the store.
